Gifts Received by MLAs

Section 13 of the Act prohibits a Member from receiving a fee, gift or benefit that is connected directly or indirectly with the performance of the Member’s duties.  The Act recognizes that Members sometimes receive gifts as the result of protocol, custom or social obligation. The Act also recognizes that Members may receive gifts that are of such a nature they could not reasonably be regarded as likely to influence the Member in the performance of his or her duties.

Members are entitled to accept these types of gifts; however, if the individual value of the gift is more than $500 or, if the total value of these gifts received in any calendar year is more than $500, the gift or gifts must be disclosed to the Commissioner who must then include them in the Member’s Public Disclosure Statement.
