Employment Opportunity: Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commissioner
The Prince Edward Island Human Rights Commission was established in 1976 to administer and enforce the PEI Human Rights Act. The Commission investigates and adjudicates complaints, develops public information and education to advance human rights principles, and advises government on human rights matters.
The Commission operates independently from government. Commission staff investigate complaints, facilitate settlement discussions and, when necessary, refer matters to a hearing called a Panel
About the Role
Commissioners are appointed on a part-time basis to provide high-level oversight and governance to the Commission and to perform adjudicative functions. Commissioners are subject to conflict of interest rules and may be required to refrain from certain activities during their term of appointment.
Time Commitment and Compensation
- Approximately 10 meetings per year, generally held during regular business hours.
- Meetings are generally a minimum of three hours and may extend to a full day.
- Meetings are generally held in person at the Human Rights Commission office in Charlottetown.
- Meetings may occasionally be held elsewhere in Prince Edward Island.
- Virtual participation may be accommodated when appropriate.
- Per diem: $142 (subject to provincially established rates)
- Travel expenses reimbursed in accordance with provincial rates.
Governance and Oversight Responsibilities
Commissioners provide high-level oversight and governance of the Commission by:
- Ensuring the Commission is operating effectively and is financially responsible.
- Providing strategic direction to the Commission.
- Raising areas of public concern.
- Participating in human rights and adjudicative training.
- Participating in community outreach and education activities.
- Representing the Commission at conferences and public events.
Adjudicative Functions
Commissioners may be required to:
- Review decisions of the Executive Director.
- Consider complaint materials, investigation reports and legal opinions.
- Conduct hearings under the Human Rights Act.
- Assess evidence and apply the law.
- Prepare written decisions.
Decisions prepared by Commissioners may be reviewed by the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island.
