Investiture Ceremony
Where is the ceremony held?
Recipients are invested in the Order by the Chancellor of the Order, the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island, in a ceremony hosted in the fall at Government House,1 Terry Fox Drive, Charlottetown. The date and time of the ceremony are made public in a press release issued in September.
The ceremony takes between 30-45 minutes.
The Premier's Reception immediately follows the ceremony and is hosted at Government House, with light refreshment provided.
Who can attend?
Attendance in person is by invitation only and requires business or semi-formal attire. Dignitaries, participants, and recipients' guests receive invitations in the mail from the Chancellor of the Order. Ceremony participants are asked to arrive twenty minutes before the ceremony and have reserved seating in the front row. All remaining seating for guests is first come, first serve.
Due to limited seating, names are checked at the door to ensure only invited guests are allowed entry.
For those unable to attend, or wishing to view remotely, the investiture ceremony is live-streamed on the Order’s YouTube channel, @OrderPEI.
Is parking available?
Limited parking is available on Government House grounds and provincial staff will direct guests to the on-site parking. Free parking is also available on streets in the surrounding area.
Can I take photos?
Guests have the opportunity to take photos with their recipient immediately following the ceremony and during Premier’s Reception.
How do I address dignitaries?
The Premier’s Reception is a chance for dignitaries, recipients, and guests to mingle. “Your Honour” is used to address either the Lieutenant Governor or Premier during conversation, and “His Honour” and either “Premier Lantz” or “Mr. Lantz” if referring to them when speaking to others.
What does the program look like?
Following opening formalities and remarks by the Chancellor and the Premier, the recipients are invested in the Order. Their nominator introduces them to guests, after which the recipient comes forward to receive the insignia and letters patent of the Order from the Chancellor with the Premier's assistance.
Formal photos are taken by the provincial photographer of the presentation to each recipient. Once all three recipients have been invested, all three are called forward and presented as the newest members of the Order of Prince Edward Island and a group photo is taken.
