On March 25, 2026, Brad Trivers was elected as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly by a secret ballot vote among his fellow MLAs.
Mr. Trivers first entered the Legislative Assembly as the Member from Rustico–Emerald in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019 and 2023. Before becoming Speaker, Mr. Trivers served as minister for several portfolios as a member of Executive Council, dealing with issues as diverse as education, environment, water, climate change, social development, and housing. While in opposition, he served as the Official Opposition Whip and Opposition Critic for Communities, Land and Environment; Finance; and Acadian and Francophone Affairs, and he also chaired the Public Accounts Committee.
Outside of his work in the legislature, Speaker Trivers is an active member of his community. He has coached minor sports and is a member of Central Queens United Church. He also enjoys playing old-timers hockey in North Rustico, and sings and plays guitar at local ceilidhs, kitchen parties and benefits.
Before entering public life, Speaker Trivers worked as an information systems analyst for over twenty-four years. Having completed the University of Waterloo’s co-operative education program, he holds an Honours degree in science and business, with minors in physics and computer science.
As the son of two high-school teachers with a mixed beef and corn farm, Speaker Trivers grew up in Northern Ontario loving sports, 4-H, music and academics.
