Statement from the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly on the Passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

On behalf of the Members of the Legislative Assembly, I extend to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and all members of the Royal Family, our heartfelt condolences on the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

In common with our fellow subjects in all parts of the Commonwealth, we are mourning this loss. Tributes to his deep sense of duty are being offered from people around the world with whom we are joined in sorrow. In the days ahead when the House again meets, a Resolution of Sympathy will be offered by the House to express our heartfelt condolences.

Prince Philip first visited the province of Prince Edward Island in 1951, and has made several visits over the years, including a visit with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1973, to help the province celebrate the centennial of Prince Edward Island’s entry into Confederation. I believe that most people would agree that Prince Philip has devoted his life to public services, and that he has made many genuine and lasting connections with the people of this province during his Royal visits over the years.

The Legislative Assembly sends its sincere and deepest sympathies to Your Majesty during the days and weeks ahead. The House has adjourned early today in solemn observance of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
