Consultation on Bill No.129, An Act to Amend the Early Learning and Childcare Act (No. 2)

The Standing Committee on Education and Economic Growth is charged with matters concerning education, heritage, culture, tourism, industry, labour, provincial infrastructure, transportation, telecommunications, immigration, rural development, municipal and provincial planning, and other such matters relating to education and economic growth.

Bill No. 129, An Act to Amend the Early Learning and Childcare Act (No. 2), was referred to the Committee by Motion 131 for further study and for consultation with the public and stakeholders. 

The bill's intent

For further details of Bill No. 129, the promoter of the bill, upon introduction to the Legislative Assembly, provided the following overview (November 22, 2022):

“This bill ensures that all staff working in childcare centres will be required to have a vulnerable sector check, and it also clarifies that people who do not work in childcare centres while children are present are not expected to get that same check. This moves the provisions currently in regulation into the legislation. The intent of this bill is to ensure that youngest Islanders are protected, in consultation with the Child and Youth Advocate.”
