The Honourable Dr. Wassim Salamoun, O.P.E.I.
Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island
Dr. Wassim Salamoun is a respected community leader and medical professional who has dedicated his life to the well-being of the people of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.).
Born in Lebanon, he proudly became an Atlantic Canadian as he finished his medical and surgical training in Nova Scotia, and later began his career as an otolaryngologist at Prince County Hospital in Summerside, Prince Edward Island in 1989.
Along with his medical practice, he assumed the position of Medical Director for Prince County Hospital from 2006 to 2015. In that time, he served Islanders by delivering health care, providing expertise on hospital administration, and serving on various local and provincial medical advisory committees.
In 2017, Dr. Salamoun ended his clinical practice and continued as Medical Director for Prince County Hospital. He then became the Medical Director for hospitals in western P.E.I. until his retirement in 2022.
Dr. Salamoun is the recipient of community awards recognizing his long-time service and outstanding ethical conduct, such as the Dr. Tom Moore Award from Prince County Hospital and the Putting Patients First Award from the Medical Society of P.E.I. He has also volunteered with Mercy Ships, an international organization providing surgeries free of charge for people in need in West Africa. After his retirement from his medical career, he has enjoyed improving his skills at wood turning.
Dr. Salamoun holds a Doctor of Medicine from the Université de Bordeaux and completed his training in Halifax and Pittsburgh.
Dr. Salamoun has lived in Summerside for 36 years with his wife Marie. They have two sons.
